Yes! I’ve been inspired by countless women of colour with incredible style over the years. I decided to keep this piece to the top 5 women (with a bonus #6) who first opened my eyes to the world of personal style, but am working on several other pieces for this column that will naturally include women of colour as and where I have been inspired by them.

With every new Cool Girl you have written about I was like „Yes! That’s also my cool girl” and „Oh another one Yes!”

V thin white girls and Leandra as #1? It’s a bit out of touch to me

Amelia Ward's avatar

Definitely hear that! But as mentioned in the piece, these were the most influential (for me) five fashion girls on my radar as I was growing up- by no means an exhaustive list of my inspirations! They’re also in chronological order so definitely no deeper meaning to Leandra being the first beyond that she was the first I started following :)

I was obsessed with Alexa Chung, Leandra Medine and Camille Rowe!!! They’re so effortlessly stylish - never trying too hard. They were true to who they were and wore everything with confidence and ease, which is really what makes someone cool.

idk what to call the feeling when you realize that other people were also consuming and loving the same niche aesthetic preferences and fashion girls that spoke to my lil teenager self. so many of these women were deeply aspirational and inspiring.

Are we soulmates who haven't met yet? This feels like my list haha! Though I would add Olivia Palermo (aka elclectic queen) and Chloe Sevigny

Such a good read! You captured their magic so well and I love the comment about having a story behind each piece, it is so true.

What a wonderful thing to see beauty in the choices of other women and fold them into your own life.

I love the Camille Rowe video mention in here…I would literally watch that video once a month back in the day lol!

Also will add in my nomination of the chokehold French fashion icons Caroline de Maigret and Jeanne Damas had during that era

Excellent nominations, well worthy of a mention! On my first day living in Paris, I passed Jeanne Damas on the street in the Marais and was immediately convinced it was a biblical sign that I was in the right place.
